Why Do I Need To Test For Asbestos?

Per the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) the State requirement is that you test ANY suspect material prior to damaging or disturbing it.

It is dangerous and illegal to improperly disturb asbestos-containing building materials. Asbestos can be found in these and many other common building materials: Ceiling textures, vinyl floor coverings and mastic, boiler and pipe insulation, heating and cooling duct insulation, ceiling tile, roofing products, clapboard shingles, etc. (for a comprehensive list of asbestos containing materials, refer to our blog). Any suspect asbestos-containing material MUST be assumed to be asbestos-containing until an asbestos inspection is completed by a Certified Asbestos Building Inspector (CABI).

The age of your home does not matter when testing for asbestos, buildings of any age may contain Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM), and even those newly built have ACM.  There is no safe level of asbestos exposure, which is why the strict rules and regulations are put in place by the State of Colorado and enforced by the Colorado Department of Health and Environment (CDPHE). For more information on the Rules, Regulations, and Testing, check out our blog.

The year your home was built does NOT matter when it comes to asbestos. Homes of every age MUST be tested per Colorado State Regulation.

Once asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed, asbestos fibers are released into the air and are easily inhaled once they become airborne. Asbestos accumulates in the body each time you are exposed to the fibers, and once the damage is done, there is no way to reverse it. Asbestos exposure is linked to very severe diseases including Mesothelioma, Asbestosis, and Lung Cancer
